Established in 1923, less than twenty-five years after passage of the first laws regulating the practice of optometry in the United States, the UC Berkeley's School of Optometry is now widely recognized as the international leader in eye and vision research. Its enduring reputation for excellence
and innovation in the visual sciences is reflected not only in the school's distinguished history of important advances, but also in the range of pioneering research projects pursued by its current faculty.
Whether it be unraveling the secrets of infant vision development, solving the mystery of nearsightedness in children, preventing or reversing the dimming and haziness of elderly vision, or seeking new treatments for prevention of sight loss accompanying macular degeneration, Optometry School faculty are at the frontier.
Benefiting from such research efforts, the School's graduates often go on to become world leaders in training, research, and professional eye care, and each year the School's clinics provide state-of-the-art care to about 65,000 members of the campus and local communities. The School of Optometry is proud to celebrate 75 years of offering hope to those who suffer from reduced sight or are at risk of losing sight.
